I haven’t knitted socks since I was a teenager and was desperately trying to finish the pair for Christmas for my dad. Now that hubby always has cold feet in winter, I thought I might give it a try and knit a pair of socks for him.
A quick search online as a refresher lead me to spiral socks. Basically spiral socks are tube socks without a heel and due to the pattern are very stretchy and fit lovely. I don’t particularly like to knit heels, even though I know how to.
As it turns out knitting spiral socks is very easy and making them the right size is also easy due to the fact that they are so stretchy. As you can see with my baby pair, I made them extra long so that they would fit the baby for a longer time. A newborn would have a wide cuff folded over whereas an older baby would not have the cuff folded down.
This pattern fits me (woman’s size 8 shoes) and my hubby (men’s size 8 shoes)
Material
- 2 skeins sock wool, one for each sock. You will use about 40 gr wool per sock, with the rest you can knit a baby sock.
- 4 double pointed needles, 3.25 mm or U.S. size 3
- darning needle
- gauge is: 28 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) on 3.25 mm (U.S. 3) needles
My Pattern
3 knit, 3 purl for 4 rows and then offset either to the left or right by one stitch so that it will go like this: 2 knit, 3 purl, 3 knit, 3 purl.
Knitting Instructions
- Cast on 48 stitches divided over 3 needles (16 stitches on each needle)
- Knit the cuff in 1 knit, 1 purl, for about 2 inches
- Start the pattern:
- 1st row of pattern: 3 knit, 3 purl for 4 rows
- 5th row of pattern: 2 kit, 3 purl, *3 knit, 3 purl* repeat till end of row and knit like this for 4 rows total
- 9th row of pattern: 1 knit, 3 purl, *3 knit, 3 purl* repeat till end of row and knit like this for 4 rows total
- 13th row of pattern is the same as 1st row of pattern
- repeat rows 1-12 for 12 inches. If you want longer socks make longer. If you try on the sock right now the knitting needles still in, the sock should just cover your little toe
- Toes:the toes are finished in knit stitch, it is easier to keep track of things
- *knit 4 stitches, decrease 2 stitches by knitting them together* – repeat to end of row
- knit 4 rows in knit stitch
- *knit 3 stitches, decrease 2 stitches by knitting them together* – repeat to end of row
- knit 3 rows in knit stitch
- *knit 2 stitches, decrease 2 stitches by knitting them together* – repeat to end of row
- knit 2 rows in knit stitch
- *knit 1 stitch, decrease 2 stitches by knitting them together* – repeat to end of row
- knit 1 rows in knit stitch
- now knit 2 stitches together to the end of the row
- cut the thread leaving a long tail
- Finishing the socks:
- darn in the wool ends from both the toes and the cuff. You are done.
Enjoy wearing your socks. They feel really soft.
Hey there! Someone in my Facebook group shared this site with us so I came to check it out. I’m definitely enjoying the information. I’m bookmarking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Fantastic blog and outstanding design.
Thanks for letting me know. I am happy to hear that.
Hello! I’m at work browsing your blog from my new iphone! Just wanted to say I love reading through your blog and look forward to all your posts! Keep up the outstanding work!
Can you please tell me what my cast on would be for a size 10 or 11 man’s sock? Thanks
The spiral sock pattern is quite forgiving. I would knit a test patch and then check out other sock patterns for the size 10 or 11 and go by their recommendations.
