Did you get a tablet computer for the holidays? These computer are lots of fun and so practical, but the screen gets easily scratched.
I went looking in the stores for a cover, but did not find any I liked. So, my next step was to look online for instructions on how to make your own. There a quite a few around, so yes, you can make your own tablet cover.
Click on the image to the right to get the full PDF instructions on how to make your own 7″ Tablet Cover. The cover is designed for a Nexus 7 tablet, but will fit most 7 inch tablets: Nexus 7, iPad Mini, Kindle Fire, Nook Color and Kobo Arc. For any tablet with a rear-facing camera there is no hole for it.
Read on to hear my story about making my own table cover for my Nexus 7 tablet.
Version 1
For the first cover I used corrugated card board and quilt batting on the outside and glued fabric on the inside to make it look nice. Oh boy, those were 3 big mistakes.
- It turned out to be way to bulky and uncomfortable.
- I glued the inside cover and the glue seeped through the fabric and left hard spots as you can see in the picture.
Version 2
Back to the drawing board.
This time I used regular cardboard, iron-on interfacing to adhere the fabric to the outside and and it worked.
If you are wondering what I used for elastics, those are hair elastics.

Version 3
I am always on the lookout for different ways to create something and the tablet cover is no exception. I was looking for something lightweight and easy to work with.
Inspiration struck and I experimented with plastic canvas. It is lightweight and durable.
Rather than using the traditional embroidery stitch I used a stitch that looks like knitting. The advantage of that stitch is that I can stitch it in such a way that I won’t have to cover the inside to make it look nice. So, now the outside and inside look almost identical and the beginning and ends of the yarn are hidden inside the stitching.
These two covers are in my shop and can be purchased.
Front and back covers are: 8.25 inches high by 5 inches wide. The spine is 8.25 inches long and 0.5 inches wide (4 holes in the plastic canvas).
If you are interested in instructions for the plastic canvas covers please let me know and give me some feedback in the comments below.
Beautiful projects you created. I would like to learn to make it with plastic canvas.
I basically used the template I created for the cardboard one and then just used plastic canvas instead.
Hello, I do plastic canvas, however having the measurements would make it so much easier to begin the project. Would appreciate if you would be willing to share those. Thank you. Really like the plastic one best.
Hi Lorrain,
I have put the measurements in the post above.
Would love to make your tablet cover with plastic canvas if you would supply the measurements. Thank you.
Hi Holly,
Follow the instructions for the paper one and make adjustments to match the size of your tablet.
