Pin Cushion from a Knit Tie

I needed a new pin cushion as my current one is made from felt and I just can’t stick my wool needles into it. Then when I was cleaning out the closets I came across an old knitted yellow tie from my husband. He’s not going to use it any longer and I did not want to throw it away. That’s when I remembered that I had seen a tutorial for making pin cushions from old woolen sweaters and that was my inspiration.

I made one pin cushion from the front part of the tie and the second one from the back part of the tie. The knitted tie has a wider longer front and shorter wider back and a narrow center. I used the front part up to the point where it gets narrow for one pin cushion (#1) and then the rest for the second pin cushion (#2).

Pin Cushion Version 1

size: 2 inches in diameter, 2 inches tall

  • cut the tie
  • start rolling the tie like a jelly roll starting with the cut end
  • this one is rolled flat, so that the top of the pin cushion is flat
  • sew the end to the roll

Pin Cushion Version 2

size: 2 inches in diameter, 2 inches tall

  • start rolling the tie like a jelly roll starting with the cut end
  • this one is rolled so that the center of the pin cushion is higher than the edges
  • sew the end to the roll
  • I put this roll inside a bottle cap from a shampoo bottle
